Austin-based musician Alex Peterson launched the alexalone project, which first surfaced in 2016 through the release We Can Be Alone Together. That recording merged expansive shoegaze textures with lo-fi indie rock. After serving as a touring member of Hovvdy and Lomelda, Peterson secured a deal with Polyvinyl and converted alexalone into a full band ahead of the 2021 album Alexaloneworld. The 2023 release Alexalone Technical Research sustained the ensemble format across multiple extended pieces.

As singer and guitarist, Peterson remains active in Austin’s independent scene and excels at building exploratory sonic environments that stretch from lo-fi loops and unsettling drones to swirling shoegaze rooted in the 1990s. Music under the alexalone name began appearing in 2016 with the six-track dramatic set We Can Be Alone Together; the Sadness3 EP followed the next year. While also touring as bassist for Hovvdy and Lomelda, Peterson earned notice from NPR and similar outlets for the inventive solo material.

Peterson brought Sam Jordan, Mari Rubio, and Andrew Hulett into the studio for a more collaborative process on the first proper album. Drawing from sources as varied as author Haruki Murakami, indie rockers Yo La Tengo, and the Nintendo game Zelda, alexalone completed Alexaloneworld, issued by Polyvinyl Records in 2021. Over the subsequent two years the group tightened its sound, sharing members and touring with Lomelda, whose leader Hannah Read also participated. The 2023 album Alexalone Technical Research preserved the taut, heavy atmosphere of this quintet lineup. Built from five tracks, two of them approaching 13 minutes, the record suggested the influence of Slint, Boris, and Sonic Youth.
