Biography
Originating from Moscow, this composer and pianist studied with Field while counting Balakirev and Zverev among his own pupils, the latter of whom later guided Rakhmaninov, Skryabin, and Ziloti. Piano pieces by both Balakirev and Tchaikovsky were dedicated to him. His chief legacies remain an influential piano method and an anthology of 130 Russian folksongs.
