Although his heart leaned toward music, Alexi Lalas achieved genuine renown on the soccer pitch. Born in Detroit, he first rose to prominence while enrolled at Rutgers University, where his senior season in 1991 earned him both the Hermann Trophy and the Missouri Athletic Club Award as the nation’s outstanding collegiate player. The following year he appeared for the United States Olympic squad, and his performances for the national team at the 1994 World Cup transformed him into a widely celebrated figure whose flaming red goatee and ready humor made him the squad’s most visible personality. He then became the first American to appear in Italy’s top division before returning stateside in 1995 to join the New England Revolution in the fledgling Major League Soccer. Outside of matches he pursued rock music, singing and playing guitar with the Gypsies, whose albums Woodland and Jet Lag were released during this period; his own debut record, Ginger, arrived in 1998.
