Alexi Tuomarila stands out as a powerful presence among European jazz pianists from Finland, recognized broadly for his exceptional technical skill on the keys and his engaging original works. Since establishing leadership of the Alexi Tuomarila Trio in 2006, featuring Mats Eilertsen on bass alongside Olavi Louhivouri at the drums, he has also directed several other ensembles. His piano work has featured in the Tomasz Stanko Quartet as well as in Drifter, the project under his direction, and the Eero Koivistoinen Quartet. The pianist’s approach blends elements from post-bop, modern classical traditions, modal explorations, progressive jazz, and carefully organized improvisations that often carry melodic qualities, resulting in an intricate and folksy melodic character. His initial recording as bandleader came with Voices of Pohjola, performed by a quartet formation. By 2007 that ensemble had produced a pair of additional records. The year 2006 saw the introduction of his enduring piano trio via the Constellation album, whose positive response drew strength from their live shows. Upon entering an agreement with Edition Records in London, the group put out Seven Hills in 2013, followed by Kingdom in 2017 and the award-winning Sphere in 2019. For the 2024 release Departing the Wasteland, Tuomarila assembled a sextet that incorporated synthesizers together with saxophones, trombone, and electric guitar.

Born in Pori along Finland’s northern shoreline, Tuomarila started piano lessons at the age of four, displaying sufficient talent early on to gain entry into the Espoo Music Academy in Finland. Although classical music held his affection, he turned first to rock music before shifting into jazz through exposure to his father’s extensive collection of recordings. His application to the Oulunkylä pop/jazz Conservatory in Helsinki succeeded in 1993. He pursued further training the next year at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, completing a Master of Music in 1999. An ensemble bearing his name came together, and he participated in numerous performances and recording dates alongside various European jazz artists. The Alexi Tuomarila Quartet took shape toward the end of 2000 and produced Voices of Pohjola as its first album, issued by Igloo; two years afterward the group delivered 02 through Jazzaway and conducted tours across Europe. Tuomarila disbanded that unit in 2004 to create the Alexi Tuomarila Trio, regarded as a Finnish jazz supergroup, incorporating drummer Olavi Louhivuori and bassist Mats Eilertsen. They performed at jazz festivals throughout Europe to develop their shared sound, issuing Constellation on Jazzaway in 2006. Following additional international performances, the trio members turned to individual endeavors for a period, during which Tuomarila received an invitation in 2007 to become part of the Tomasz Stanko Quintet, staying on until 2017 and eventually including Louhivuori as well, contributing to the 2009 release of the band’s classic Dark Eyes. In 2011 Tuomarila participated in SkyDive alongside Louhivuori, guitarist Thomas T. Dahl, and Eilertsen. A tour in 2012 preceded his signing with Edition Records, after which the trio recorded Seven Hills in a studio located in Portugal, an album that received global praise upon its 2013 appearance. He entered Eero Koivistoinen’s four-piece group in 2014, resulting in Hati Hati as the initial release among three collaborative albums. Once touring concluded for that project, Tuomarila established the jazz-rock outfit Drifter together with saxophonist Nicolas Kummert, who had participated in his earlier quartet, drummer Teun Verbruggen, and double bassist Alex Gillain; their single album Flow came out on Edition in 2015. Illusion, the second album from Koivistoinen’s ensemble featuring the pianist, emerged in 2016. The trio, having resumed touring activities in 2016, issued Kingdom two years afterward during May, earning positive responses not only from the worldwide jazz audience but also from those in indie rock, pop, and experimental music circles. Additionally, Tuomarila performed in live settings with the Tomasz Stanko NY Quartet, whose members included drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Reuben Rogers. Following considerable touring, the trio returned to the studio and produced Sphere, released by Edition in 2019, which garnered broad critical praise, widespread radio play internationally, and significantly higher streaming figures. Sphere received the Emma award for best jazz album, equivalent to the Grammy, and earned a five-star review from BBC Music Magazine, with further recognition from Downbeat, JAZZIZ, and additional American jazz outlets. Beyond his touring schedule, Tuomarila participated in the 2019 recording of Diversity alongside Koivistoinen. Over the subsequent years he contributed to sessions with Lithium, Manuel Dunkel, and Lionel Beuvens’ MOTU while composing and performing live whenever possible. Early in 2024 Tuomarila convened his trio in the studio with guitarist Andre Fernandes, trombonist Gil Silva, tenor saxophonist Jose Pedro Coelho, and alto saxophonist/flutist Joao Guimaraes to create the eight-track Departing the Wasteland, which he both composed and produced before its November release on Edition. The album received praise from jazz, pop, and rock publications around the world and appeared on numerous year-end lists of top jazz recordings compiled by critics in the United States, Europe, and Japan, appealing to an expanding listenership through its inventive deployment of textured synthesizers, sonically treated electric guitars, and melodic modal compositions.
