Biography
Alfredo Rios, recognized worldwide under the stage name El Komander, works as a regional Mexican vocalist and composer. He has become an international ambassador for Mexico’s alternative scene, chiefly through a fresh strain of banda that leans heavily into narcocorridos—story songs recounting the violent lives and often brutal deaths of the nation’s drug traffickers.
Born in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Rios pursued formal studies in composition across the traditional Mexican forms of cancion, nueva cancion, banda, and mariachi. His early local performances drew interest from label scouts thanks to an exuberant stage presence and sharply felt, boisterous material that helped define the leading edge of the Latin alternative movement.
The singer’s first recording, the live set En-Vivo!-Desde-Badiragato!, appeared on La Disco Records in 2006. El Katch followed in 2009 and featured the hit single “Nomas por Ser Sinaloense.” Intensive road work combined with radio exposure turned the album into a major success. Subsequent releases included Archiv Privado in 2010, Y Seguimos La Borrachera in 2011, and the live album Desde Zapopan (En Vivo) in 2012; the latter was reissued with extra tracks in 2013 and introduced the hit single and video “Cuernito Armani.”
