Alfredo Rodriguez stands out as a Cuban jazz pianist whose international reputation rests on a rigorous classical education that equips him equally for concert-hall repertoire and his preferred improvisational idiom. Born in Havana in 1985 and given his father’s name, the celebrated vocalist, television presenter, and showman, he took up percussion studies at seven and piano at ten. Formal enrollment followed at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory and subsequently the Amadeo Roldan Music Conservatory, where he captured first prizes in classical events at both institutions. Informal experience arrived early as well: beginning at fourteen he performed and wrote arrangements for his father’s orchestra, while at fifteen an uncle’s gift of Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert album introduced him to spontaneous improvisation. He later attended Cuba’s leading academy, the Instituto Superior de Arte, again securing multiple competition victories. In 2006 an invitation to the Montreux Jazz Festival led founder Claude Nobs to arrange a private audition for Quincy Jones, who immediately expressed interest in future collaboration—an opportunity that materialized only three years afterward. While assisting his father in Mexico, Rodriguez resolved to relocate to the United States carrying merely clothing and a single suitcase. Detained at the Laredo border crossing, he persuaded officials of his legitimacy by declaring his identity as a musician en route to work with Jones; they ultimately released him and even summoned a taxi. Once inside the country he accepted any available engagements until he could assemble his own trio. His initial project with Jones occurred later in 2009, when the producer enlisted him alongside Chinese composer Tan Dun and songwriter Siedah Garrett to create the English-language theme “Better City, Better Life” for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Continued performances drew consistent praise from reviewers and audiences alike; relentless touring included return appearances at Montreux plus the Playboy, Detroit, Newport, San Francisco, North Sea, Umbria, and Vienna Jazz Festivals, together with engagements at Ronnie Scott’s, Yoshi’s, and The Blue Note. In 2011 Rodriguez joined Detroit’s Mack Avenue Records roster. His debut album, Sounds of Space—jointly produced by the pianist and Jones—appeared in 2012, earning broad critical approval and additional touring prospects. During spring 2014 he released The Invasion Parade, again co-produced with Jones, featuring original compositions rooted in Cuban folk practices alongside homeland standards and featuring distinguished guest artists. The partnership with the veteran producer extended to the pianist’s next Mack Avenue release, 2016’s Tocororo. The title, drawn from the Cuban bird that perishes from melancholy when confined, prompted Rodriguez to observe: “...not only the desire for liberty, but the necessity of it...freedom, travel, and the cross-pollination of Cuban culture....” Supporting musicians Richard Bona, Ibrahim Maalouf, and Ibeyi reinforced that theme. In 2018 he delivered his fourth studio album, A Little Dream.
