In the opening years of the 1980s, Ali Thomson achieved chart success through the lead single from his tuneful album Take a Little Rhythm. Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, the youthful Thomson remained at home grappling with arithmetic basics as his older sibling Doug performed on bass for the British beat group the Alan Brown Set. Following Doug and John Helliwell's departure from that ensemble to join Supertramp, Ali recognized the advantages of pursuing a career in rock music. He commenced vocal performances and piano playing alongside local groups. During the middle portion of the 1970s, Thomson relocated to London, securing a position composing songs for Mountain Records. Doug arranged a tryout for Ali with A&M, prompting the artist to board a jumbo jet across the Atlantic and settle in California. Although "Take a Little Rhythm" drew criticism for imitating Paul McCartney, it managed to attain the Top 20. The strong subsequent release "Live Every Minute" came close to but did not reach the Top 40. In 1981, Ali contributed to Gary Wright's radio comeback via the moving "Really Wanna Know You," yet the younger Thomson ultimately became known as a one-hit wonder victim.
