Alias Grace, though frequently noted because of its connection to the experimental English pop pair No-Man, functions independently as a compelling duo whose understated, atmospheric work draws on folk, jazz, and pop traditions. Founded in Cambridge, England, in 1996, the group comprises multi-instrumentalist Peter Chilvers, known for his piano and guitar contributions to Samuel Smiles alongside No-Man’s Tim Bowness, and Irish-born vocalist Sandra O’Neill, whose voice delivers intense emotional resonance. Early performances centered on live reinterpretations of material by other songwriters, yet the arrival of the striking debut album Embers demonstrated a substantial body of original songs. The equally assured follow-up, Storm Blue Evening, surfaced in 2001 on Burning Shed, the label established by Bowness and Chilvers.
