At age 14, Alih, the singer-songwriter of Dominican descent, first took up songwriting under the principal sway of her parents, the tropical performers Iluminada and Anibal de Peña. She ultimately gravitated toward pop, securing a contract with Universal Music at 17 before issuing her self-titled bilingual debut album in 2001, which arrived after the advance track “It’s O.K.”
