Pianist Alim Beisembayev, whose training took place partly in Britain, has swiftly emerged as a leading exponent of demanding virtuoso repertoire after capturing first prize at the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition in England. Born in 1998 in Almaty, then the capital of Kazakhstan, he began piano lessons at age five in a local music school, prompting his family to arrange overseas study once he reached ten. His early breakthrough arrived in 2008 with first prize at the Nutcracker International Televised Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow. He subsequently entered the Purcell School in suburban London, where his teachers were first Rustem Hayroudinoff and later Tessa Nicholson; during this period he earned third prize at the International Liszt Competition for Young Pianists in Weimar, Germany. In 2015 he claimed first prize at the Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, and soon appeared with the Fort Worth Symphony; additional early concerto engagements included the Svetlanov Orchestra of Moscow, the New Russia Orchestra, and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. He continued his studies at London’s Royal College of Music, completing a master’s degree under Vanessa Latarche.

His 2021 Leeds victory, achieved with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini performed alongside the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrew Manze, immediately expanded his profile as both recitalist and recording artist. A disc documenting his competition performances was issued that same year, leading Warner Classics to sign him and release an EP of works by Scarlatti, Ligeti, and Ravel. Subsequent concerto appearances have taken him before the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and Stuttgart’s SWR Symphonieorchester. In 2022 his first complete album, devoted to Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes, appeared on the Warner Classics label.
