Biography
Allette Brooks, a singer-songwriter and guitarist based in California, put out three folk-rooted albums that emphasized her knack for clever lyrics while confronting environmental and social topics, all anchored by a rhythmic drive. Although she had received classical vocal training that gave her a three-octave range, Brooks first picked up the guitar only during her junior year of college while studying ecology in Botswana. After returning to the United States she launched into steady live work, logging 150 shows across 25 states in 2000 alone, and across a five-year stretch she self-produced the albums Privilege (1996), Silicon Valley Rebel (1999), and Swim With Me (2001).
