Biography
Alphonso Johnson began on trombone before switching to electric bass in 1968. Early performances took him through bands led by Horace Silver, Woody Herman in 1972, Chuck Mangione in 1973, and Chet Baker. He achieved wider recognition through tours and three albums with Weather Report from 1974 to 1976. Later periods followed with Billy Cobham between 1976 and 1977, Flora Purim, and the Crusaders. His funky electric-bass lines have remained influential and in steady demand in studios and across the fusion and funk scenes ever since.
