Biography
Forming in early 2011, Portland experimental rock trio ALTO! comprises guitarist Derek Moneypeny plus drummers Steven T. Stone and Kyle Reid Memory, both of whom also handle electronics and loops. Their hypnotic, polyrhythmic pieces rely on heavy distortion and frequently cast the guitar in a percussive role that evokes Konono No. 1’s amplified scrap metal percussion as well as Glenn Branca’s no wave guitar symphonies, though some tracks lean toward more exotic, desert-like melodies. The self-titled debut LP appeared on Raheem Records in 2012, followed by a remix album and a tour-only cassette in 2013. A second self-titled full-length surfaced in 2014, another tour-only tape arrived in 2015, and the band then signed with Trouble in Mind, which released LP3 in 2016.
