Biography
Since the 1970s Alvin Darling has composed and produced both traditional and contemporary gospel music. Born in Newark, New Jersey, and serving as a longtime pastor, he issued his first recordings—including the 1978 album All Together for One—on the modest Inspirational Sounds imprint before shifting to wider-reaching companies such as Savoy and Emtro. The Alvin Darling Ensemble later became Alvin Darling & Celebration, which made its initial appearance on Billboard’s gospel chart in 1992 with the live release Medley of Praise, featuring the Sounds of Serenity, Voices of Faith, and the North Jersey GMWA. Several further albums followed into the 2010s, among them 2009’s You Can Make It and 2013’s Waiting Right Here, the ensemble’s strongest chart performers. In addition, Shirley Caesar, Albertina Walker, Bishop Jeff Banks, and Dorothy Norwood have all recorded compositions by Darling.
