Amebix emerged in England in the summer of 1978 and would later earn recognition as one of the most influential heavy bands in existence. At first the musicians operated under the name the Band With No Name, and this collective of impoverished, unkempt punks cut a rough six-song demo that moved only four copies. After adopting the Amebix moniker they placed the track “University Challenged” from that demo on the inaugural volume of the little-known Bullshit Detector compilation series.

Existence for the group proved turbulent throughout its run, as the members genuinely embodied the existence depicted in their words and visual presentation. On the gatefold of the posthumous collection The Power Remains guitarist Stig noted that “none of us signed off the dole in all the years we were together.” Residing in squats and other precarious dwellings, subsisting on discarded food, and surviving through various schemes, the musicians somehow secured gear and maintained enough rehearsal discipline to remain active for nine years. Despite persistent hardship they proved remarkably productive, generating material that ultimately filled seven full-length albums, two 7" records, two compilation appearances, and the earlier Band With No Name demo.

Before 1983 the roster fluctuated frequently. Shortly after Bullshit Detector appeared, a drummer named Martin joined; one immediate advantage was his offer for the band to occupy a manor house in Dartmoor belonging to his absent parents. When the owners returned they expelled Amebix and placed Martin in an institution for “correction.” Core members the Baron and Stig then recruited synthesizer player Norman and relocated to Bristol in 1981. By 1983 they had enlisted drummer Virus, who departed Disorder to join. That year brought the Who’s the Enemy EP, the Winter 7", and the debut album No Sanctuary, all issued on Spiderleg Records; Norman performed on the two singles while a substitute handled the LP. Following a brief tour the band returned home and, in 1984, added George on synthesizer. With George installed for the remainder of their career they toured again before dismissing Virus.

The final configuration solidified in 1985 when Spider took the drum stool. After parting ways with Spiderleg the musicians secured a deal with Alternative Tentacles, the label founded by Dead Kennedys vocalist Jello Biafra, shortly before Spider’s arrival. Arise appeared on Alternative Tentacles in 1985, yet the relationship proved short-lived and the band departed after that release. In 1987 they issued the album Monolith only months before disbanding.

Numerous bootlegs and retrospective collections have surfaced both during and after the group’s active period. Although these recordings, official and otherwise, remain largely unknown to mainstream listeners, Amebix exerted considerable influence within hardcore, crust punk, and metal circles. Acts as varied as Sepultura, Neurosis, and Deviated Instinct have acknowledged the pioneering role played by these originators, who fused metal, the punk squatter existence, and political rage into a dense, relentless, ballistic assault.
