Biography
Chicago's American Heritage came together in 1997 when guitarist Andrei Cabanban, bassist Adam Norden, and drummer Scott Shellhamer began working as a unit. Their output quickly set them apart through convoluted, largely instrumental anti-art art metal that rejected conventional songwriting habits. Extensive touring and recording earned them both elevated praise from critics and broad bewilderment, while the lineup shifted repeatedly. After the group's debut performance in 1998, Mike Duffy took over the drum chair from Shellhamer, who rejoined three years afterward as rhythm guitarist. Cabanban exited in 2002, forcing another redistribution of roles that moved Norden to guitar and brought in Ray Donato, formerly of Speed of Light and Grout Villa, on bass. Vocals appeared sparingly on certain tracks during this period. Multiple independent labels released the band's singles and albums, among them Why Everyone Gets Cancer (1999), We Will Pay You $125 to Observe You Deteriorate (2000), Through the Age of Quarrel and into the Era of Putting Up With It (2001), and Bipolar (2004).
