Biography
Ami Koita offers the viewpoint of women within Malian music traditions. Her commanding voice and energetic performances on stage have established her as an inspiration to females across West Africa. Although her birthplace is Kirina, shared with Salif Keita, her lineage diverges significantly from his. Unlike Keita, who defied noble parents in pursuing music, Koita entered a Jali household where such artistic pursuits faced no opposition. She began with conventional Jali styles but has progressively incorporated contemporary elements.
