Amindi characterizes her output as "pastel rap," citing its luminous textures and focus on verbal dexterity, even as her performances span wide emotional territory, favor singing over rapping, and cross stylistic boundaries with ease. Recording as Amindi K. Fro$t, a modest alteration of her birth name, she reached listeners worldwide in 2017 and 2018 through the dancehall-tinged single "Pine & Ginger." Later sessions with Fat Tony and Isaiah Rashad accompanied the arrival of her first EP, Nice (2021), and her initial mixtape, Take What You Need (2023). These projects have kept her work classified variously as alternative R&B, hip-hop, and indie.

Born Amindi Kiara Frost in Inglewood, California, to Jamaican immigrant parents, she absorbed reggae, gospel, and hip-hop within the household. Ukulele study beginning at age 12 steered her toward GarageBand productions and SoundCloud uploads. Commercially released material surfaced while she was still in high school, and her breakthrough occurred in 2017—the same year she appeared on the YouTube series SummerBreak—with the heritage-rooted, pop-adjacent single "Pine & Ginger." Acquired by Big Beat, an Atlantic-distributed imprint, the track spread internationally and appeared on VP's Reggae Gold 2018 compilation. Further Big Beat singles included "Eggs Aisle" and the Kari Faux collaboration "Love Em Leave Em," after which she obtained expanded creative autonomy via a Human Re Sources deal. Before 2020 ended, she issued the three-track Minztape, spotlighting "Mercury Retrograde," along with the additional single "YWSYLS."

Earlier appearances on recordings by Fat Tony, UNO Stereo, and Raedio led to her most visible guest role yet on Isaiah Rashad's Top Ten 2021 album The House Is Burning, where she co-wrote and sang "All Herb" and supplied background vocals on two further selections. Concurrently she delivered Nice, an eight-song EP marked by deep introspection. She concluded that active year by uniting with 27Delly, Ace Henderson, and Kiah Victoria on "Fantasy" for the Insecure season-five soundtrack curated by Issa Rae. EQT Recordings followed in 2022 with C Both Sides, pairing "Centipede" and "Cyclops." After several advance tracks, the label released the mixtape Take What You Need the ensuing September.
