Biography
Originating as a side endeavor from the Moroccan dub/trance/trad music group Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects, this project draws on four of its members, who gain extra input from several "Agdal-Garden All Stars" for the 1995 release Agdal Reptiles on Majoun. Their sound merges traditional Moroccan elements with sampling in the vein of New Order, rap beats recalling the Bronx, and sudden bursts of synthesizers alongside assorted audio effects. Keyboards and samplers operate next to violins, mandolin, flute, rai-type vocals, and select electronic rhythms. The results lag behind Aisha Kandisha's strongest material, particularly when the beats lean toward clichéd Western dance music. Still, the tracks hold attention by shifting direction in unexpected ways at every turn. ~ Richie Unterberger
