An Cafe, also known as Antic Cafe, formed a Japanese pop/rock outfit whose appeal among Japanese youth quickly crossed borders into mainland Asia, Europe, and the United States. The group came together in Tokyo during May 2003, its founding lineup consisting of Miku on vocals, Bou on guitar, Kanon on bass, and Teruki on drums. Bou departed in 2007, after which Takuya joined on guitar and Yuuki took up keyboards. Following a handful of concerts and demo recordings, the quartet secured a deal with the independent imprint Loop Ash in 2004, issuing its first single, “Candyholic,” that March and adding two further releases, “_69” and “Komou Cosmos,” before year’s end.

In 2005 the band delivered its first full-length effort, Amedama Rock, then issued the successive singles “Karakuri Hitei,” “Tekesuta Kousen,” “Escapism,” and “Merrymaking,” closing the year with the follow-up album Shikisai Moment. Subsequent activity brought the 2006 release Magnya Carta along with additional singles, while the group’s reach widened beyond Japan: Magnya Carta appeared in South Korea in 2007, and early performances established footholds in Europe and the United States.

Gokutama Rock Cafe arrived in 2008 as the band’s initial European offering through the Gan-Shin label. The album incorporated the 2007 singles “Kakusei Heroism” and “Ryuusei Rocket” alongside the fresh track “Cherry Saku Yuki!!,” ultimately reaching the Swedish Top Ten and registering on Finnish charts. To promote the international edition, An Cafe embarked on its first European tour.
