Biography
An Horse, an Australian duo crafting fuzzy indie pop, swiftly attracted listeners abroad after securing a prime opening slot on a 2008 U.S. run with Tegan and Sara solely on the strength of their independently issued EP. Momentum built rapidly, landing the pair on Mom + Pop Records for the well-received 2009 album Rearrange Beds and its 2011 successor, Walls. Following an intense stretch of road work, the group stepped away before resurfacing in 2019 with the return album Modern Air.
Originally conceived as a solo outlet by Kate Cooper, formerly of Iron On, the project expanded into a duo in 2007 once drummer Damon Cox came aboard. The pair had met while employed at Skinny’s, an independent record store in Brisbane, Australia, and began composing material there, shaping a straightforward melodic style around Cox’s drumming and Cooper’s distorted guitar. When Tegan and Sara performed an in-store set at the shop, Cooper handed them a rough mix of the debut EP Not Really Scared; the Canadian act later surprised the Australians by inviting them on the 2008 American tour. The combination of that self-released EP and exposure alongside an established act ignited interest, with growing followings in Australia—where the band later supported Death Cab for Cutie—and the United States fueling demand for a full-length debut.
Mom + Pop Records, the Canadian indie label, issued Rearrange Beds in March 2009, and a remix collection followed twelve months afterward. After touring behind both projects, An Horse paused briefly, with Cooper heading to Montreal and Cox to Melbourne. They regrouped in Vancouver to record with Howard Redekopp, who had previously mixed Rearrange Beds. The sessions yielded Walls, released in April 2011, after which the duo toured extensively and appeared at festivals including Lollapalooza, SXSW, and Rolling Stone Weekender. Once that cycle ended, the band entered hiatus, during which Cooper issued her self-titled 2015 solo album Cooper. Following an early 2018 reunion, An Horse joined the Front Bottoms on a U.S. tour and put out the single “Get Out Somehow.” They then signed with the American label Lame-O Records, which released their third album, Modern Air, in May 2019.
