Born Anaïs Croze on August 20, 1976, in Grenoble, the French folk-blues chanteuse spent her formative years in Marseille and later pursued English studies in Aix-en-Provence. She first drew notice as frontwoman of the popular rock band Opossum, which she led from 1999 until its dissolution in late 2002 following the release of the group’s debut album Excuse-Moi, J'voulais Te D'mander. A solo career began the next year.

Her initial solo tour started in spring 2003, after which she captured her live debut LP The Cheap Show in January 2004; the set reached stores a year later. Its unusual fusion of chanson, folk, blues, pop and rap generated strong grassroots enthusiasm across France, propelling the album into the top ten and ultimately past half a million copies—an achievement without precedent for any live debut release in the country. The project was reissued in 2006 with bonus tracks and a DVD.

During 2007 Anaïs joined forces with LA punks The Blood Arm and wrote and staged the one-woman musical The Amber Story. Her first studio album, The Love Album, arrived in 2008 under the production of hip-hop legend Dan the Automator, yet no further original record appeared until A l'Eau de Javel surfaced in 2012.
