Biography
Anastasia Coope, an experimental singer and songwriter, transforms minimal folk compositions into enigmatic sonic journeys through the use of vocal layering and unconventional production methods. Following a series of modest endeavors, she collaborated with Jagjaguwar to issue her first full-length record, Darning Woman, in 2024.
Originating from upstate New York, Coope drew upon psychedelic folk traditions, the works of outsider artists, and Scandinavian choral traditions while crafting her approach to songwriting. In 2021, she began sharing her music publicly via self-released tracks, which were soon compiled into the EP Seemingly.
Her output attracted notice from fellow artists in a similar vein, leading to an invitation from Animal Collective to participate in their festival in the Netherlands that they programmed; shortly thereafter, she joined Avey Tare from Animal Collective on tour. In 2023, Angus Andrew from Liars put out her 7-inch single Tough Sun via his own imprint, while Jagjaguwar issued the debut album Darning Woman during May 2024. Supporting performances for the record were scheduled to encompass multiple festival slots alongside opening shows for Woods.
