Born in Sydney, Australia, under the name Jonathan Baker, the electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist Anatole first drew broad attention toward the end of the 2010s. His approach fused drifting ambient layers with propulsive rhythms and bass lines rooted in house music, a combination showcased on projects such as the 2019 album Emulsion. Raised amid the expansive terrain of the Blue Mountains just beyond Sydney, Baker absorbed surroundings that would later shape his expansive, film-like arrangements. Formal training in classical and jazz disciplines followed at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he adopted the trumpet as his instrument. A loaned Flying Lotus album from a friend ultimately steered him toward electronic production methods. His initial forays arrived in 2015 via standalone tracks including “Colours” and “Away,” the latter showcasing vocalist Tash Parker; both cuts later appeared on that year’s Surrounds EP. A companion remix collection emerged in 2016, after which Baker devoted the ensuing two years to developing new work. Signing with Mercury KX Records paved the way for the 2018 release “Like Deep Water,” which incorporated sampled piano by English composer and labelmate Ólafur Arnalds alongside violin contributions from Australian performer Mishi Stern. Additional 2018 singles included “Only One,” featuring Sydney vocalist IDA, and “Medlow Bath.” Early the following year Anatole issued his debut full-length, Emulsion.
