Anatomy of a Ghost, an emo/post-hardcore outfit that originated in Portland after an earlier period in Alaska, assembled during the latter half of 2002. Their substantial online footprint and vigorous concerts enabled the group to cultivate a loyal underground audience in short order. Vocalist John Gourley, drummer Nick Simon, bassist Zach Carothers, and guitarists Joe Simon and Dewey Halpaus comprised the lineup; within months they secured a contract with the Portland indie imprint Rise Records. The band spent summer 2003 on a nationwide tour supporting Saosin and Boys Night Out, then issued its debut album Evanesce that October under license to Fearless Records. Reviewers likened the record to Thrice, Thursday, and Coheed & Cambria, the last comparison arising chiefly from Gourley’s higher-pitched vocals. Anatomy of a Ghost disbanded in May 2004 once the members elected to pursue separate musical directions; Gourley and Carothers soon reappeared in Portugal. The Man. Although the group reconvened in early 2005 to begin work on a new album, Gourley and Carothers shifted their energies back to Portugal. The Man by midsummer, delivering that project’s first album in early 2006. Halpaus also issued a record that June with his new metal-leaning outfit the Burning Room via Mediaskare.
