Having grown up in Seattle during its rise as a hub for alternative sounds, this petite vocalist and composer began creating music in childhood, first on piano before shifting to guitar. By 1997, while based in a college town just north of the city, Andrea Maxand assembled her initial band, the Minerals. The outfit played locally as she kept developing new songs, allowing her distinctive, witty songwriting approach to take shape. Once the group disbanded, Maxand turned to fresh compositions. Between 2000 and early 2001 she tracked songs for her first full-length release. Aided by Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie, she issued the album Angel Hat on Montesano Records. Critics responded warmly, likening her work to Cat Power. In 2002 she reentered the studio, resulting in a follow-up EP.
