Biography
A jazz guitarist whose style fuses post-bop, contemporary jazz, and Gypsy swing, Andreas Varady entered the world in Slovakia in 1997 to parents of Hungarian heritage. He was raised in a household steeped in music and received his first guitar instruction from his father. Demonstrating prodigious talent, Varady—after his family moved to Ireland—had begun busking regularly in Limerick and Cork by age ten, while also posting performance clips on YouTube. Producer David Lyttle discovered the footage and reached out, leading to the 2010 release of Varady’s debut album, Questions, which Lyttle produced and which expanded the guitarist’s reach beyond Ireland. The following year he became the youngest artist ever to headline Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London. At the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival he appeared as a guest in Quincy Jones’ Global Gumbo showcase, an encounter that later resulted in a management agreement with Jones. Varady’s self-titled second album arrived in 2014 on Verve, featuring contributions from Roy Hargrove, Gregory Porter, and additional notable musicians.
