Born in Calhoun, Georgia, USA, the Baxters formed a father-and-son team that featured violin alongside guitar. Across four sessions held from 1927 to 1929 they committed their music to disc, preserving a seldom-documented strain of earlier, rural Black tradition from the state. Several sides leaned toward blues, among them the understated and wistful “KC Railroad Blues,” while others, such as “Georgia Stomp,” functioned as country dance pieces that closely paralleled white traditional recordings of the era. The latter even incorporated spoken dance calls more commonly tied to white country practice. Underscoring that link, Andrew—the father, described as half-Cherokee Indian—joined the white old-time band the Georgia Yellow Hammers for one title at the 1927 session.
