Biography
Recognized as a pivotal Polish composer, he pursued bold innovation and experimentation at the outset of his career through the deployment of quarter-tones alongside intervals of silence in place of conventional rests. Later on he turned to a more communicative and emotionally forthright manner of writing, one shaped to reach wide public audiences. Nearly all works he completed before 1944 were lost when the Warsaw uprising laid waste to the city.
