In the late 1980s Andy Curran assembled the rock outfit Soho 69, serving as its lead singer and bassist. Guitarists Michael Borkosky and Simon Brierley joined alongside drummer Glenn Milchem; when Milchem exited, Eddie Zeeman took over the drum chair. Alert Records gave the Canadian act its first contract in 1990, yet the label released the material under Curran's name alone as a solo project. The Soho 69 designation did not appear until 1993.

Only a small number of full-length albums emerged during the group's run, so listeners had to follow the frequent name changes to locate each record. The first, simply titled Andy Curran, arrived in 1990. Several tracks on that debut attracted positive coverage and earned Curran a Juno nomination for Best Hard Rock Album plus the Most Promising Vocalist award.

Three years later Scatterbrain surfaced on Hypnotic Records under the billing Andy Curran & Soho 69. After roughly five years out of the spotlight the musicians returned in 1998 as Caramel and delivered a self-titled album on the new moniker. Michael Borkosky did not participate, so Virginia Storey came aboard as guitarist.
