Throughout his professional journey, keyboardist Andy LaVerne has displayed stylistic breadth extending from the manner of Bill Evans through Chick Corea and fusion, all while steering clear of repetition across decades. Classical piano training at Juilliard commenced for him at age eight. Jazz exposure soon followed, bringing valuable guidance from Bill Evans. Early touring credits encompassed Woody Herman’s big band between 1973 and 1975, work alongside John Abercrombie and Miroslav Vitous, and membership in Stan Getz’s ensemble from 1977 to 1980, where electric piano appeared regularly. The 1980s found him active in the Brubeck-LaVerne Trio, which also included Chris Brubeck and Dan Brubeck, issuing a tribute to Chick Corea on DMP, and establishing a reputation as a dedicated jazz educator. During the 1990s LaVerne turned greater attention to acoustic piano, documenting a solo recital at Maybeck Recital Hall. Across his discography he has led sessions for Storyville in 1977, Jazzline, SteepleChase, DMP, Triloka, Concord, and assorted smaller labels.
