After several years already spent in jazz, Angela DeNiro's "break" arrived upon meeting Ron Aprea, who would become her husband. A veteran of the Woody Herman, Les Elgart, Tito Puente, and Frank Foster ensembles, Aprea was working with the Skitch Henderson Orchestra when an offer arrived to join the group in which DeNiro was then appearing, after which, as they say, "the rest is history." Aprea's big band supplied the instrumental foundation for both of her albums, the 1996 Just for the Fun of It and the 1998 release Swingin' with Legends. The latter recording appropriately showcased such figures as Frank Foster, Lew Tabackin, and the celebrated Lionel Hampton. Possessing a music degree from C.W. Post University, DeNiro has worked with numerous leading contemporary jazz musicians since 1988. Her quintet was presented with Arvell Shaw's Louis Armstrong Legacy Band. At the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Boise, Idaho she shared the stage with luminaries including Freddie Cole, Ethel Ennis, and Diana Krall, performing with the Kenny Barron Trio and Hampton's Big Band. Equipped with secure pitch and phrasing, an instinctive grasp of swing, and a marriage to a highly capable musician, DeNiro ranks among the more promising and vocally assured talents in the field.
