Biography
Growing up with a passion for songcraft, Angela Desveaux blends the heartfelt simplicity and textured soundscapes of traditional country alongside the intimate storytelling found in modern folk and the grounded energy of alternative country. Her birthplace lies in Quebec near Montreal, though she passed a significant portion of her youth on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. That region boasts a longstanding tradition of folk music influenced by Irish and Spanish heritage, and its unique fiddle traditions profoundly shaped her artistic development. Classic country formed another key part of her upbringing, given her parents' admiration for Loretta Lynn, Roger Miller, Lefty Frizzell, and Hank Williams. As amateur players themselves, they hosted occasional gatherings where her mother performed vocals, her father handled guitar duties, and her uncle contributed on piano.
The family relocated back to Montreal once she reached ten years old. During her early teenage years, her older brother's involvement in a local rock group prompted Desveaux to begin performing with several area rock acts. Her interest in country traditions resurfaced after encountering alt-country groups including Son Volt and country-rock ensembles such as the Flying Burrito Brothers. She took to open-mike stages throughout Montreal and performed alongside bluegrass outfits prior to becoming the frontwoman for the Sonny Best Band in 2001. Motivated by the work of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris, she turned to composing original material and eventually presented a demo to Howard Bilerman, the ex-drummer of Arcade Fire who runs the Hotel 2 Tango Recording Studio in Montreal. Impressed by what he heard, Bilerman aided in forming a group for studio work. Brian Paulson signed on as producer, resulting in the release of her debut album Wandering Eyes during autumn 2006, with Mighty Ship arriving two years later.
