Biography
Originally launched in 1998 as the side endeavor Fiji Mermaid within their shared hometown of Lynchburg, VA, the trio of Jared Brown on bass, P.J. Sykes on guitar, and Jeff Roop handling vocals, drum programming, and guitar came together informally at first. Once they shifted focus to making Angels VS Aliens a full-time commitment, the group found its sound aligned with Superchunk, Mogwai, Sunny Day Real Estate, and the Smashing Pumpkins, leading to the March 2000 arrival of their debut self-released album Eleven Shades of Crimson.
