Biography
Hailing from Albacete, Angelus Apatrida have developed into Spain’s most globally recognized thrash metal outfit. Although rooted primarily in the style of Bay Area pioneers such as Exodus and Metallica, the quartet also weaves in death-metal traits and New Wave of British Heavy Metal influences, yielding a constantly shifting, cross-generational and cross-cultural barrage of sound. Their breakthrough arrived with the 2009 major-label debut and third album Clockwork, while further recognition followed for the politically charged sixth release Cabaret de la Guillotine in 2018, the uncompromising self-titled Angelus Apatrida in 2020, and the defiant Aftermath in 2023.
The group formed in 2000 when two local Albacete bands merged. Early debates over direction—during an initial phase leaning toward power metal—ended by 2002, when the members committed fully to thrash, altered both sound and presentation, and locked in the permanent lineup of Guillermo Izquierdo on guitar and vocals, David G. Álvarez on guitar, José J. Izquierdo on bass, and Víctor Valera on drums. Independent releases Evil Unleashed in 2006 and Give ’Em War in 2007, combined with their intense live performances, generated significant attention on the metal scene. The decisive step came in 2009 with a contract from Century Media Records and the Daniel Cardoso-produced Clockwork, an album that collected multiple year-end honors and led press and fans alike to hail the band as the rising force in European thrash.
Extensive festival appearances throughout Europe ensued, including support slots alongside Slayer and Megadeth. The follow-up The Call landed in 2012, achieving Century Media’s highest Spanish chart position to that point. In 2013 the band toured with Havok and Savage Messiah while promoting a double-LP reissue of its first two albums, then issued the punitive fifth studio album Hidden Evolution in 2015. Two years of nonstop road work at home and abroad preceded a return to the studio with extensively refined material, resulting in the sonically diverse Cabaret de la Guillotine the following year and its fan favorite track “Sharpen the Guillotine.” The 2020 eponymous Angelus Apatrida reached number one in Spain and marked the group’s first appearance on the official German and Swiss charts. Momentum continued with Aftermath in 2023, a powerful and unrelenting collection shaped by the turmoil of the preceding three years.
