Biography
Around 1980, drummer Ross Hales, bassist Rachel Melas, and keyboardist/singer Elizabeth Fisher united in Vancouver to launch the band Animal Slaves. Their brand of pop/rock stood apart from conventional pop through an unconventional infusion of funk and jazz. The trio performed across Canada and the United States, building a modest following in both countries. Animal Slaves cut the independent cassette Secret Sharper in 1986 expressly for sale at concerts. Their self-titled album appeared the next year. After further touring and studio work, Dog Eat Dog arrived in 1988, succeeding the sophomore release. Tracks such as "Jello Boys," "Scum," and "Bones Brigade" emerged from the now-defunct rock group.
