Born on 30 August 1867 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and deceased on 22 October 1936 in Hollywood, California, USA, Caldwell performed vocally during childhood and later joined a juvenile operatic troupe. She eventually redirected her musical focus toward songwriting, a field then uncommon for female participants in the entertainment industry. From 1907 she based herself in New York, supplying lyrics and librettos to numerous musical comedies. The productions include The Lady Of The Slipper (1912), Chin Chin (1914), Pom-Pom (1916), Jack O’ Lantern (1917), The Canary (1918), She’s A Good Fellow (1919), Tip Top (1920), The Night Boat (1920), The Bunch And Judy (1922), The Cabaret Girl (1922), Stepping Stones (1923), The City Chap (1925), Criss Cross (1926), Oh, Please! (1926), and Three Cheers (1928). Composers whose numbers received her words in these and additional stage works encompass Hugo Felix (‘Kiss Me’), Otto Harbach (‘Cinderella Girl’, ‘She’s On Her Way’), Raymond Hubbell (‘Look At The World And Smile’), Jerome Kern (‘Once In A Blue Moon’, ‘Whose Baby Are You?’, ‘Left All Alone Again Blues’), Glen MacDonough (‘Raggedy Ann’, ‘Moon Of Love’), and Vincent Youmans (‘Like She Loves Me’, ‘Nicodemus’, ‘Blue Danube Blues’, ‘I Know That You Know’). She also served as a founder member of the American Society of Composer, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
