New York's Antarctica came together in 1995, its original roster consisting of Chris Donohue on vocals, guitar, and programming, Glenn Maryansky on drums, Ben Zimmerman on bass, Eric Richter handling vocals and guitar, and Nicole Waxenblatt on keyboards. The group issued the 23:03 EP two years later, then followed it in 1999 with the full-length 81:03, produced by Alap Momin of Dalek and The Lapse. Live dates alongside National Skyline, Jets to Brazil, The Promise Ring, and Jimmy Eat World marked their brief career, which ended with a breakup that same year. Donohue and Maryansky subsequently launched the synth-laden Ova Looven alongside Steven Depalo, who had handled sound for the majority of Antarctica performances, and Jim Minor of National Skyline.
