Biography
At the age of seven the flutist toured Europe with his father, giving concerts in Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Prague, and Copenhagen. While in Prague he met Carl Maria von Weber, whose influence appears throughout most of Furstenau’s output. He preferred the old-fashioned flute because of its range of timbres and therefore received little acceptance in England, where listeners favored the instrument as played by Nicholson. His works comprise concertos, concertinos, serenades, fantasies, and numerous sets of variations drawn from operas by Weber, Meyerbeer, and Bellini, among others.
