Biography
Portuguese by birth, the composer and organist Antonio Carreira modeled many of his approaches on those of the Spanish figure Hernando de Cabezon. Traces of further European traditions likewise appeared in his keyboard writing. Antonio may have launched a series of variations whose existence is implied only by the architecture of his tentos. His keyboard pieces avoided reliance on vocal models then favored in Spain, instead allowing the same work to be realized in multiple modes. Decorative procedures could have linked that modal trait to the sharp dissonances found throughout his output.
