Antonique Smith has established herself across multiple platforms as a vocalist and performer, with work spanning live theater, motion pictures, television, and independently released soul-rooted R&B material. She entered the world in East Orange, New Jersey in 1983 and first appeared before cameras in a minor part on the Sidney Lumet-created series 100 Centre Street in 2002. Wider attention arrived when she assumed the role of Mimi in the popular Broadway production Rent, remaining with the show from 2005 through 2007. During that same calendar year she joined the cast of Julie Taymor’s feature Across the Universe. In 2009 she demonstrated her combined vocal and dramatic range by portraying rapper/singer Faith Evans in the Biggie Smalls biopic Notorious. That high-visibility assignment drew extensive critical notice and opened further film opportunities, including the 2011 releases Abduction with Taylor Lautner and Alfred Molina and Yelling to the Sky opposite Zoë Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe. A Kickstarter drive in 2012 successfully underwrote her first full-length album, which was followed the next year by the online single “Hold Up Wait a Minute (Woo Hoo).”
