Born to renowned composer Sardar Malik, Anu Malik—also identified as Anwar Malik—developed an instinct for India's mainstream commercial sound, producing tracks that combined charm and broad commercial viability for typical Bollywood viewers. His debut opportunity came with the 1981 picture Poonam. After nearly ten years of scoring assignments, wide notice arrived via Baazigar in 1993, which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. Scores he supplied around the same era for Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee, Sir, and Akele Hum Akele Tum rank among his strongest work. Refugee brought him the National Film Award for Best Music Director in 2001. Playback singing forms an occasional sideline. Main Hoon Na delivered his second Filmfare Award in 2004. The number "Chamma Chamma," originally heard in China Gate, later appeared in Moulin Rouge.
