Biography
Anugama, a producer and multi-instrumentalist, fused the exotic instrumentation of world music with new age introspection and an expansive range of ambient electronics, cultivating a modest yet devoted audience that supported his lengthy, highly active career. Born in Cologne, Germany, where his intense musical passion first took shape, Anugama followed his curiosity across distant regions. He spent his teenage years in Hamburg performing on drums and holding a job at a music store before undertaking a transformative five-year stay in Asia during his twenties. While abroad, he cultivated a deep engagement with spiritual philosophies and meditation practices. These pursuits soon shaped his music, which grew to embrace an array of cultural traditions including African and Caribbean beats, Hawaiian rhythms, Indian meditative forms, and more. Throughout the 1980s he issued successive albums exploring these diverse interests while performing every instrument himself. His output showed no signs of diminishing in the 1990s, as he continued astonishing his niche following with an apparently inexhaustible supply of fresh creations.
