Biography
Anz, the Manchester-based producer and DJ, creates tracks and mixes that exuberantly fuse multiple strains of bass-heavy club sounds, among them electro, jungle, garage, and breaks. Recognition has come her way for yearly mixes built entirely from original material as well as for releases such as the 2019 EP Invitation 2 Dance, shaped by freestyle influences. With All Hours in 2021 she took her first steps into pop songwriting on the single "You Could Be," which features George Riley.
Born and raised in London, Anz began DJing during her university years in Liverpool. She moved to Manchester after finding the city more hospitable and took up music production twelve months later. Under the Anz name she issued tracks and remixes that merged varying hues of grime, garage, bassline, and related club styles. Her opening collection of original tracks and edits, Autumn/Winter Dubs 2015, launched an annual series whose production mixes grew more widely praised with each edition. In 2017 she put out her debut EP on the Chow Down label and began a monthly NTS Radio program on the London-based online station.
Invitation 2 Dance, a lively EP that inventively blended electro, freestyle, and garage, appeared on Finn's 2 B Real Records in 2019. The widely celebrated Spring/Summer Dubs 2020 mix received a limited cassette pressing, and one track highlighted in the prior year's set, "Loos in Twos (NRG)," was released as a single by the forward-thinking U.K. bass label Hessle Audio. DJ Mag named her Breakthrough DJ of the Year, and a six-month BBC Radio 1 Residency followed in 2021. That same year she introduced her OTMI imprint with the single "Unravel in the Designated Zone" and made her Ninja Tune debut via the EP All Hours. The project was introduced by the radio-friendly lead single "You Could Be," which Anz had spent years developing before collaborating with London-based singer George Riley. Her remix of PinkPantheress's "All My Friends Know" surfaced in 2022.
