Apollo 100 emerged in the 1970s as a brief-lived continuation of the instrumental ensembles that had flourished during the prior decade, among them the Tornados and Sounds Incorporated. An arranger from Newcastle named Tom Parker assembled the lineup, which included former Tornados drummer Clem Cattini along with guitarist Vic Flick, known for the “James Bond Theme,” guitarist Zed Jenkins, percussionist Jim Lawless, and bassist Brian Odgers. Their first release, the single “Joy,” adapted Bach’s “Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring” and featured orchestral backing; the track climbed into the American top 10 on the pop singles chart. An album and a follow-up single appeared afterward, yet neither achieved comparable sales. By 1973 the ensemble had dissolved, although the debut single continues to evoke nostalgia among listeners who recall 1970s AM radio.
