Biography
Ryan and Dale Marquez make up the indie pop duo the Apple Orchard, whose wispy, shambling songs draw roots from the Pastels and the Sugargliders while nodding toward the Bridal Shop and Cats on Fire. The brothers first captured the track “Wide Awake” in 2000 under the Apple Orchard name, which stems from a Bouquet song. After the song landed on the Filipino compilation Mutual Admiration Society, the pair chose to carry the fledgling project forward. Once a stretch of writing yielded enough material, 2003 delivered a burst of activity that included appearances on the compilations Dashboard Teddy, Vol. 1 via Dorothy Records, We Are Not Alone, Vol. 6 through Best Kept Secret, and Stamp Collecting (For Beginners) on Secret Crush Records, plus the cassette releases Last Wednesday from Popgun Recordings and Paris Was a Daydream on Best Kept Secret. Additional compilation spots and releases arrived in 2006 and 2007, among them the cassette Across Haymarket and the Triangle on Best Kept Secret, the single A Hiding Smile issued by Humblebee Recordings, and the 3" CD-R That Happy Glow via Cloudberry Records. The following year the brothers’ own imprint Haymarket Recordings put out the duo’s debut full-length, Half-Steps Toward Bright Skies. A mini-album, Leafy Lanes, appeared on the same label the year after that, and the 7" single A Month of Spring followed in 2010.
