Mário Seve of Nó Em Pingo D'água launched Aquarela Carioca in tandem with percussion master Marcos Suzano, a collaborator of Lenine. Working beyond commercial circuits and unbound by any single genre, the ensemble creates instrumental music shaped by choro—which they soon largely abandoned—alongside rock, samba, jazz, Indian traditions, and classical sources. Their debut album Aquarela Carioca appeared in 1989, the year they also played the Free Jazz Festival in Rio and São Paulo. Later came the CDs Contos in 1991 and Idioma in 1996. In 1993 the group backed Ney Matogrosso on the show As Aparências Enganam, a live set that was taped and issued as a CD.
