Biography
Aquariana connected with Father Yod’s mid-’70s collective—a gathering of health-food innovators and psychedelic improvisers—while still in her teens. She took a job at his Los Angeles restaurant The Source, became one of his thirteen “wives,” and supplied backing vocals for live appearances and recordings by Ya Ho Wa 13 as well as other Source Family ensembles.
During the collective’s most fertile stretch of artistic output and at the peak of the restaurant’s commercial success, sessions were held for a projected solo album of her own songs, one of several releases the group intended to issue later. Those plans halted when the family left Los Angeles for Hawaii in 1974. Yod’s death in a hang-gliding accident the following year placed every unfinished recording in extended limbo.
Aquariana thereafter raised their child as a single mother and remained involved in music, singing with a gospel choir in L.A. and directing a series of concerts for service members during the Desert Storm campaign. She died in 1996. In 2013 Drag City obtained the master tapes of her unfinished self-titled album and released it widely. Her scant solo recordings present spare piano beneath an ethereal voice delivering songs on life and spirituality.
