Musician and illustrator Archer Prewitt entered the world in Frankfort, Kentucky, where he spent his formative years before pursuing studies at an art school in Kansas City. While there he helped launch the Coctails, the now-legendary quartet whose eclectic kitsch-pop drew inspiration from Martin Denny and anticipated the lounge revival by roughly five years. The group moved its base to Chicago in 1991, releasing four albums along with multiple singles until it concluded its run with a farewell performance on New Year’s Eve 1995. By then Prewitt had also joined the acclaimed post-rock outfit the Sea and Cake, and once the band finished its 1997 album The Fawn he entered the studio to cut his first solo effort, the outstanding In the Sun. White Sky appeared two years afterward. Parallel to his recording work, Prewitt built a reputation in visual art, having previously served as a colorist for Marvel Comics and later earning praise for his independent comic Sof' Boy. In fall 2000 he issued the third solo album, Gerroa Songs, which captured a markedly leaner aesthetic after being tracked on vintage reel-to-reel equipment in Australia. Three, released in 2002, restored a richer pop sensibility and more intricate arrangements. Although the Sea and Cake resumed activity in 2003, Prewitt resumed his solo path and delivered Wilderness in early 2005.
