Despite receiving the verdict that she lacked vocal ability after auditioning in high school, lead singer Kate Leduc refused to abandon her musical ambitions. During the late 1990s the Australian crossed paths with guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Fred Leduc, subsequently supplying backing vocals to his recordings and to the band Deluc. Fred Leduc had already issued solo material while completing a Bachelor of Music at LaTrobe University and had begun working with drummer Anthony Scaffidi. In March 2001 the three musicians played several concerts and appeared at assorted showcases and festivals. Bassist Graeme Kent joined Arctic the following May, and later that year the band issued its self-titled debut album. Arctic has also performed at the Hard Rock Cafe in Australia. The group fuses the melodic approach of The Corrs with the dense layering characteristic of Garbage.
